Tokyo Airports

The largest city of the world, Tokyo, comprises of two main airports – Haneda and Narita. Haneda Airport, also known as Tokyo International Airport, is located 30 minutes south of central Tokyo and is exclusively for the domestic flights. This airport is considered to be the busiest airport of Asia, handling most of Tokyo’s air traffic that includes huge number of flights carrying more than 63 million passengers annually. The increasing numbers of travelers and tourists to Tokyo made the Haneda Airport overcrowded and this led to the introduction of New Tokyo International Airport.

New Tokyo International Airport was opened in 1978 to take over the international flights landing in Haneda. The airport is now known as Narita Airport and is located in the eastern portion of Greater Tokyo. This airport is a major hub of all international flights and few of the domestic flights as well. It also serves as an air traffic link between Asia and America and is the fifth busiest air freight hub in the world.

Apart from Haneda and Narita, there are other five airports in Tokyo. These airports are:

·    Chofu Airport: Located in Chofu City and handles commuter flights to the Izu islands.
·    Oshima Airport: Located in Oshima island
·    Hachijojima Airport: Situated in Hachijo Island
·    Miyakejima Airport: Situated in Miyake Island
